SCT...What will they come up with next?

I read an article recently about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and how six million children have been diagnosed with this condition and one million of those six million have also been classified as having Sluggish Cognitive Tempo or SCT (two million children). They report lethargy, day dreaming, and slow mental processing.

There is much to learn about this new diagnosis and to delineate the subtle nuances, like: is the sluggishness attributed to the hyperactivity?; is the day-dreaming associated with the attention deficit?; is there slow processing due to an abundance of data being sifted by the otherwise bright and active individuals? The brain is a fascinating thing and so are the thousands of classified conditions.

Are these conditions becoming more prevalent due to innovation and sophistication of diagnosing and/or an overload of stimulus from electronics and a continual bombardment of information coming at those forming little minds?

Some days I long for the solace of no technology that distracts me from human contact and conversation. It is crazy the pull that my devices have on me, even while I am sitting right next to people that I should just open my mouth and talk to! Also, why am I compelled to return a text message immediately after receiving it (confession time) while I'm driving? Why can't I let the phone go to voicemail occasionally? Why do I want to check out the next gadget that is coming to market?...it will possibly only distract me even more and aggravate the isolation I some times experience when caught in the electronic abyss.

So, SCT may or may not turn out to be the next new psychiatric challenge, but in the meantime, I am going to attempt to be considerate of others, look at them when they are talking, try to stay off my iphone, email, and calendar when others need my attention, and by all means, I will only day-dream, when I am certain I won't get caught! Hehe!
