Imagine waking up in the middle of the night, your body aching, your temperature raising. Uncomfortably, you try to get what little rest you can before you have to wake up and go to work but you’re exhausted and the cough and sore throat isn’t helping. Your nose constantly switching from stuffy to running in a matter of minutes, making it difficult to breathe. These are common symptoms of the flu. So how do you treat these symptoms?

According to WebMD, here are 5 tips to get you through the flu:

  1. Get Rest! You won’t get better any faster if you don’t stay at home and rest. Staying at home and resting will not only help your body fight the virus but also help protect others from catching the flu.
  2. Drink a lot of water. Don’t underestimate the power of drinking water when you are sick. Water helps hydrate your respiratory system while at the same time loosening your mucus, helping you to breathe better.
  3. Treat your aches and fever. Aches and fever tend to be the most unbearable symptoms during the flu. You can treat these by taking over-the-counter medication that will help lower your fever and also reduce body aches.
  4. Treat your cough. Coughs can be annoying as well as uncomfortable. To alleviate coughing, you can take over-the-counter medicine. If you are feeling creative, you can try some at home remedies such has hot tea with honey to soothe your throat.
  5. Take a hot shower. According to WebMD, "although the research is mixed on whether this remedy works," some possible benefits include relief to your achy muscles, loosening congesting, and even washing away the germs that are keeping you sick. Additionally, it can help prevent the spread of the flu virus to your family and friends.

Although there is no medication that will cure the flu virus, these tips will help lessen the intensity of the symptoms and aid your recovery of the flu.
