Community Medical Centers is committed to protecting the privacy of patients and the security of their information. Regrettably, we learned certain patient information was affected by a security event.
On August 16, 2020, a UCSF Resident had a bag stolen from his vehicle. Within the bag there was a UCSF Fresno flash drive containing research data with CMC patient information. CMC was unable to recover the stolen device.
Importantly, there were no Social Security numbers, financial or insurance information contained on the stolen flash drive. Based on our review of the incident, we believe other confidential information could have been accessed. This might include: patient names, medical record number, gender, date(s) of service, diagnosis, and medical procedures provided.
What We Are Doing
We are taking this matter very seriously. It was reported to law enforcement upon discovery. We immediately took steps to understand the extent of the incident and the data involved. Letters have been mailed to all affected patients regarding this incident. To help prevent any future security incidents, we are reviewing specific security improvements for mobile electronic data storage devices in response to this incident.
We also have a dedicated toll-free call line for anyone with questions about this incident, at 866-407-0772
. This line is open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
What You Can Do
We regret any concern or inconvenience this incident may cause you. We recommend you carefully review the bills you receive from your healthcare providers. If you see services you suspect you did not receive, please contact the provider immediately.
Our Commitment To You
While patient data theft is unfortunately becoming more common, this is not something Community ever wants to happen to our patients. Your privacy is of utmost importance to us. We will continue to work with UCSF to review this incident, and very much regret the inconvenience that this may have caused. Please be assured that we take data protection very seriously and are grateful for the continued support of our vital mission to deliver world-class care to everyone in the Central Valley.
