Understanding bariatric and metabolic surgery
Bariatric and metabolic surgery both use the same procedures, but for different purposes.
- Bariatric surgery is recommended for weight loss and is used when a patient has a goal to lose weight for personal reasons.
- Metabolic surgery is recommended when weight loss is needed to correct or improve current health problems such as diabetes, cardiac disease, or infertility.
The different procedures will result in different degrees of weight loss, and will have different rates of success on different diseases.
The truth is there are as many operations available as there are medications and new therapies are being developed all the time. Weight-loss surgery has been around for more than 50 years and has since evolved in terms of procedures offered and the way they're performed.
