Breast implants are not designed to last a lifetime, and over time the overlying breast tissue can also change, creating an appearance or feel to the breasts that’s less desirable than the original result.

If you're unsatisfied with your current implants, you have options for removing, replacing or revising them.

There are a number of reasons why you may want to change or even remove your breast implants, including:

  • To change the size of your breasts
  • To change from saline to silicone implants
  • Concern over the implants moving
  • Pain or discomfort associated with firm breasts

What is breast implant removal?

In breast implant removal surgery, also called explant surgery, the old implant is taken out. It may be replaced with new implants, though some patients choose not to have new implants.

Some common reasons for this surgery include:

  • Concerns about implant breakdown or leak
  • Pain or discomfort due to the scar or “capsule” that naturally forms around the implants
  • Symptoms that may be associated with implants known as breast implant illness (BII)

What is breast implant replacement and/or revision?

In a breast replacement or revision surgery, the goal is to replace old breast implants with new ones. You may:

  • Want to increase or decrease the size, shape or style of your implants
  • Be looking to improve the look of your breasts because you have concerns about implants moving
  • Have concerns about discomfort because of the capsule around the old implants
  • Have rippling of the overlying breast skin that’s visually unappealing

To improve the look and shape of your breasts, this procedure may be combined with other procedures, such as a breast lift. Talk to our plastic surgeons about your goals and concerns and we can tailor a plan that's specific to your needs.
