The 6-minute walk test provides a picture of your exercise capacity and general health status. It’s used to assess heart and lung function, and help monitor the effectiveness of any existing treatment you may be receiving.

What is the 6-Minute Walk Test?

During this test, you'll be asked to walk at your normal pace for six minutes. The distance you walk is measured along with your heart rate, oxygen level and blood pressure. You’ll also be monitored for breathing difficulty or chest pain.

How to Prepare for Your Test

On the day of the procedure:

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing and shoes suitable for walking

  • Bring your usual walking aids (cane, walker, etc.)

  • Bring any prescribed oxygen supplementation device you may use

  • If you have respiratory or cardiac disease, use all regular medications as prescribed on your normal daily schedule

  • A light meal is acceptable before early morning or afternoon tests

Call us ahead of time if you:

  • Have had a heart attack (myocardial infarction) in the last month

  • Have uncontrolled hypertension

  • Have uncontrolled chest pain (angina)

  • Can’t walk due to amputation, injury, weakness or paralysis
