Our Bariatric Support

Continuing your journey to health and happiness after weight-loss surgery.

A new chapter of your life is about to begin! And we'll be with you every step of the way. From our surgeon-led seminars to our bariatric support groups, we want to give you all of the tools for success. The process of adjusting to life after surgery will take some time and effort, but we’ll do all we can to help you stay on course.

To truly succeed, weight-loss surgery recovery will require a change in the way you live your life, and your body and mind will take a while to adjust, which actually begins before you leave the hospital. For instance, while you're preparing for surgery, you'll be cared for by nurses and other professionals who are dedicated to the Fresno bariatric program. You may also be visited by the bariatric registered dietician and psychologist.

These committed team members will teach you breathing exercises, how to care for your incisions, what diet to follow and what to look out for after you get home. You'll also be given written instructions regarding these issues as well as what medications your doctor would like you to continue, stop, or change.

Bariatric patient support groups

We offer a variety of support groups, each with a different patient focus. Each group offers monthly topics to help expand your knowledge of what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle. Each is offered at different times throughout the week to help better fit into your schedule.

A professional facilitates each group and will have a presentation prepared on a variety of subjects from exercise, food and nutrition, stress, behavior change and much more.

Going home

Most patients are ready for discharge the day after surgery. However, this depends on how well you have recovered from the operation, and only if your surgeon agrees that it's safe for you to go home.

Once you are home again, you may not feel hungry or thirsty, but you will be encouraged to follow your dietitian’s directions. Make sure to rest and that you're taking in adequate nutrition according to the guidelines you were given.

After surgery, some patients may experience unusual emotions when they are stressed, especially if they were a “stress eater”. Our therapist will discuss stress and coping when you meet with them one on one.

Coming back

Please make plans to attend our bariatric surgery support group meetings after surgery. You'll be surprised with the common factors patients experience after weight-loss surgery and the encouragement and support you'll receive that will help you along your journey to a healthier you!

Emotional Support

Continuing your journey to health and happiness after surgery

Embracing weight-loss takes courage and is an emotional process – and you’ll likely continue to face emotional challenges after surgery. It’s possible your relationships with friends and family will change – adding to any emotional challenges you already face because of the physical changes to your body. But please remember that we're committed to helping you through these challenges! We encourage all patients to attend our bariatric emotional support groups, where you'll meet other patients and our team of experts to walk with your through the process.

Creating a community to help you thrive.

Please join us at one of our support groups! To provide additional encouragement and education, we routinely offer monthly bariatric surgery support groups. There's no cost to attend, and any person along their journey may attend with their friends and/or family members. They are held at Fresno Heart & Surgical Hospital in the River Park conference rooms. Please arrive through the main hospital entrance.

Bariatric patient group for psychological support

What will you experience with bariatric surgery support groups? This group will focus on sharing experiences and talking about what you're going through. Help, encouragement, suggestions and ideas can be shared. Concerns and questions can be addressed. Michael Roubicek, Ph.D., a licensed social worker, will facilitate the group. Certified Bariatric Nurse Jennifer Logan will also participate on occasion to give medical and dietary direction.
